EU Council Endorses Expanded Military Support for Three Nations

(MENAFN) The EU Council has given the green light to €59.5 million (roughly $68.5 million) in fresh military assistance for the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad, and Jordan through the European Peace Facility (EPF).

This initiative is designed to reinforce defense capabilities and enhance stability across key regions.

A newly adopted €10 million ($11.5 million) support package will supply the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) with additional military resources.

This marks the second round of EPF backing for FARDC, raising the total contribution to €30 million ($34.5 million), according to a statement from the council.

The funding is intended to bolster FARDC’s capacity to safeguard civilians and re-establish governmental authority by delivering non-lethal gear that strengthens command systems, facilitates troop deployment and medical efforts, and improves river-border surveillance.

These provisions are anticipated to be delivered before the close of 2026.

The council further revealed that €14.5 million ($16.7 million) will be directed toward supporting the Armed Forces of Chad (ANT). This represents the EU’s first bilateral EPF initiative with Chad, a nation that already benefits from EU involvement through the Multi-National Task Force combating Boko Haram and the G5 Sahel Joint Force.

Through this program, the EU aims to advance the professional training of the ANT by upgrading the Koundoul Academy for non-commissioned officers (ENSOA-K), providing instructional materials, and updating the academy’s training program at Chad’s request.

Additionally, €35 million ($40.3 million) in EPF funding has been authorized to reinforce the Jordanian Armed Forces.

This brings the total assistance offered to Jordan through the EPF to €55.25 million ($63.66 million), strengthening the country’s overall defense readiness.
