89 Percent of Europeans Demand Greater Unity Among EU Member States

(MENAFN) A sweeping majority of European citizens now harbor deepening anxieties over security threats as geopolitical volatility intensifies, with 89% demanding stronger coordination among EU member nations to confront global dangers, the European Parliament announced Wednesday.

The European Parliament's newest Eurobarometer survey reveals that security-driven fears have seized public sentiment throughout the bloc.

Armed conflicts bordering the EU represent the paramount concern at 72%, trailed by terrorism threats (67%), cyberattacks originating from non-EU nations (66%), climate-amplified natural catastrophes (66%), and "uncontrolled" migration surges (65%).

Confronting this landscape of uncertainty, citizens are demanding the European Union adopt more assertive strategies.

Nearly nine in ten participants (89%) insisted EU member states must forge greater unity when addressing global crises, while 86% advocate for the EU to wield enhanced influence internationally. Furthermore, 73% argued the EU requires expanded resources to counter worldwide threats.

The survey additionally exposes widespread unease regarding global trajectories. Over half of those polled (52%) expressed pessimism concerning the planet's future, while 39% conveyed doubt about the EU's prospects.

Nevertheless, personal optimism persists at elevated levels, with 76% maintaining confidence in their individual futures and those of their households.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola indicated the data mirrors citizens' expectations for a more commanding and cohesive Europe.

"Geopolitical tensions shape Europeans' daily sense of security. Citizens expect the European Union to protect, be prepared and act together. That is exactly what a stronger and more self-assertive Europe must deliver," she said.

Cost of living dominates domestic priorities
Beyond security challenges, economic strain continues pressuring Europeans significantly. Inflation, escalating prices, and living costs remain the foremost domestic priority, with 41% urging the European Parliament to concentrate on resolving these matters.

Economic growth and employment generation rank second at 35%—a five-percent surge from May 2025.

Though most participants anticipate their living standards will stabilize over the coming five years, 28% foresee deterioration. This expectation peaks among French citizens (45%), followed by Belgians and Slovaks (both 40%), amid mounting economic instability.
