EU Vows Continued Diplomatic Efforts Amid Iran Conflict
"The whole Middle East stands to lose from the current situation and a prolonged war," Anouar El Anouni told journalists at a Brussels press briefing.
El Anouni confirmed that the bloc is maintaining active channels with regional partners, underscoring that senior European officials have already engaged in outreach specifically aimed at pulling the situation back from the brink. The EU, he added, stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its member states in its dedication to preserving security across the region.
"We will continue to contribute, using all diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and to bring about a lasting solution to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," he said.
The spokesperson further revealed that Brussels is in sustained contact with Washington — both through direct bilateral engagement and within the broader G7 framework — as hostilities between the US and Tehran continue to deepen.
Reaffirming the EU's longstanding posture, El Anouni stressed that the bloc has consistently championed a negotiated path forward, though he issued a pointed demand that Tehran must "genuinely change its behavior" if any durable solution is to take hold.
Deadliest Escalation in Years
The crisis ignited over the weekend when US and Israeli forces launched a sweeping, coordinated assault on Iran on Saturday — a strike that has so far claimed nearly 800 lives, among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has since retaliated with waves of drone and missile attacks directed at Israel and Gulf nations hosting American military assets, dramatically widening the conflict's geographic footprint and raising alarm across the international community.
