China Rejects EU’s Proposed Sanctions Package

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, China voiced strong opposition to a newly suggested European Union sanctions package against Russia, which could extend to entities in third countries, including China itself.

The reaction followed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement of the EU’s 21st sanctions package against Russia. The measures aim to target banks, cryptocurrency firms, and oil traders in third countries accused of assisting Moscow in evading existing restrictions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that Beijing rejects sanctions not authorized by the United Nations Security Council. He stated, “China has always firmly opposed illegal unilateral sanctions that lack basis in international law and authorization from the UN Security Council.”

Lin further noted that “China will closely follow relevant developments and will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.” He explained that China has repeatedly raised objections with the EU regarding sanctions and urged the bloc to retract what Beijing considers unlawful unilateral actions.

Beijing has consistently denounced unilateral sanctions imposed outside the UN Security Council framework, arguing that such measures weaken international law and damage the legitimate rights and interests of companies and individuals in third countries.
